The film belongs to the intelligent and creative Alien franchise which houses comics, novels, video games along with 6 movies till now. A person who hasn’t watched any of the Alien films, may need some self-brainstorm and research to understand the director’s Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror universe.

It seems like a classic and simple horror film which also has thriller in it; the film has a few characters in it and it is all about a remote place where there is Satan.

Storyline: Painter Jesse Hellman and his family moves to their new dream house in a rural place near Taxes. Before buying the house, Jesse was told about the two deaths happened there; however it did not stop him to buy the property. Soon he begins to listen peculiar voices in the house.

Later, a man named Ray visits to Hellman family and tells that the house used to belong to his parents. Ray advises them to move back from the house; Jesse replies him ragingly to leave. I believe horror is one of those genres which may not need a totally new idea each time. Direction, screenplay and editing plays a pivotal role for an effective horror film. We have seen zombie horror movies such as “World War Z” where there is a need of some vaccine to save mankind but “The Girl with All the Gifts” is still a good watch for audience.

Storyline: In near future, all humans have turned into flesh eating monsters due to a hazardous fungal virus; except a military force and a group of children. The children are experimented in a military base by Dr. Caroline Caldwell, they are not nursed gently. Whereas, a teacher named Helen Justineau handles the children with love and tries to make them more human. She gets attached to Melanie, the most intelligent girl in the group.
However, the group of children is not entirely immune from the virus; they still have the urge to have flesh.

When the base is captured by zombies; Dr. Caroline, Helen, Melanie along with a few military men escapes to a safer place. Dr. Caroline decides to invent a vaccine for the cure of this hazardous fungal which can only be possible with the cooperation of Melanie.

Box Office: The film has been appreciated by the viewers and critics too, but miserably it did not bring any profits to the production.

Domestic: $1,344,195, Foreign: $1553496, Total: $2,897,691

Annabelle: Creation is one of my favorite horror films along with the series’ first film “The Conjuring”. The film series is inspired by two major cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, famous American paranormal investigators. “Annabelle: Creation” is a prequel to “Annabelle” and according to the plot, it is the first film of the franchise that shows how the demon originated. The film has several blowing moments.

Storyline: The film begins in 1943 where Samuel Mullins, a doll maker, loses his little daughter “Annabelle” in a car accident. Annabelle used to keep one of his father’s dolls with her. A spirit, apparently of Annabelle’s, convinces Samuel and his wife to be with them and gets housed in the doll. However the couple seals the doll in a room when they get to know that the spirit is evil. A few years later, Samuel shelters 6 homeless girls in his house. One night, one of the girls Janice unlocks the room and the doll even after being warned.

Box Office: Following the performance of other films of the series, Annabelle: Creation earned tremendously at the box office, around 20 times more than its production cost. Now that is a true box office performer.

Domestic: $97,086,963, Foreign: $184,500,000, Total: $281,586,963

Raw is an imposing horror film, I just love the idea of the film. It displays how a pure vegetarian girl turns into a flesh eating addictive creature.

Storyline: A pure vegetarian girl named Justine is admitted to Saint-Exupéry, a school of Veterinary (treatment and diagnose of domestic animals). She is made to eat meat for the first time when her teacher gives a rabbit’s kidney to eat. Soon after the incident, Justine’s nervous system becomes unusual; there are rashes on her body. After being treated by a doctor; she begins to have vigorous urge to eat flesh; and in one such occurrence she eats her sister’s cut finger.

Box Office: Even after being a fresh movie and being praised by the audience, the film lagged at the Box Office and was proved a loss entity for the producers. It was made from a budget of $4 Million.
Interestingly, Raw performed equally at the domestic and foreign cinemas.

Domestic: $514,870, Foreign: $531,759, Total: $1,046,629

The film’s concept is magnetic, I believe majority of people might have watched or are going to watch the film after looking at its trailer. I started following Hollywood cinema after watching similar idea’s films such as “The Game (1997)” and others. Such creativity is the robustness of Hollywood.

However, “The Belko Experiment” is not truly a new idea; the year 2012’s film “Would You Rather” has already displayed such script where a rich man involves a bunch of people to play a deadly game. But “The Belko Experiment” takes it to a next level; it has more budget, more people to be killed and more killers. And, I don’t think many of you guys have watched “Would You Rather”, so watching “The Belko Experiment” will be good.

Storyline: Belko is a non-profit organization that works for businesses in South America, located at a remote place Bogotá in Colombia. On a usual working day at Belko, a message on the telecom says to kill 3 people otherwise 6 will be killed. It seems to be a prank at first to all the employees; however it is proved to be a real death game when one of the employees is shot in the head. Meanwhile, all the windows of the building get sealed and communication mediums are disconnected.

Messages continue on the telecom with new orders each time. Now, employees of Belko kill each other reluctantly to save life of them.

Box Office: The film bought over 100% of profit of its production budget which is $5 million.

Domestic: $10,166,820, Foreign: $577,314, Total: $10,744,134

As I mentioned previously that a fresh idea isn’t a necessity for horror genre. It Comes at Night tells a story of survival after a biological disaster which turned humans into monsters.

Storyline: A biological apocalypse has destroyed mankind, only a few people have remained well including Paul and his family. The family is concealed in a house at a remote place. One night, Paul catches Will in the house, apparently an intruder. Will explains that he was there just for food and water; and he too is concerned about his own family. Paul and his wife Sarah bring Will and his family to their house and they make strict rules for the survival. However, skepticism triggers later when Paul finds Will’s told story fake.

Box Office: Chasing the footsteps of another film in the list (Annabelle: Creation), It Comes at Night is also a real Box Office earner; also earned approx. 18-20 times more than its budget.

Domestic: $13,976,181, Foreign: $5,295,814, Total: $19,271,995

Metacritic Review

Split is a spectacular, fresh and a film which is a perfect example of creativity along with simplicity. Film displays a tale concerning only 4 people with a one of them (James McAvoy) suffering from extreme multiple personality disorder. James’s performance in the film also deserves an applaud along with the director and writer M. Night Shyamalan.

Storyline: Kevin is a patient of Dissociative identity disorder (DID); his case is an exception as he has 23 different personalities within him including aggressive Dennis, a woman Patricia and a 9 year old kid Hedwig. Each of Kevin’s personality embarks to behave on its turn.

Dennis kidnaps three young girls in a car and seizes them at his place. Hedwig tells the girls that they will be haunted when “The Beast” comes, an upcoming cruel apparent personality of Kevin. Now the girls need help of humble personalities within Kevin to be escaped.

Box Office: So far this is the leader of films in the list in terms of critical response and performance at the box office. Split performed equally well in the USA and other countries.

Domestic: $138,141,585, Foreign: $138,780,413, Total: $276,921,998

Horror-mystery movies always rock; I was stunned when I watched “The Visit”; entire script went topsy-turvy in a moment. Get Out is also a product of Blumhouse; so it makes a promise with audience.

Storyline: Chris Washington, an African-American guy visits his girlfriend’s (Rose) parent’s house for a short holiday along with her. Before visiting to Rose’s parents, Chris was concerned; however he gets nurtured at the place. But all the parenting turns into a nightmare for him sooner.

Box Office: I don’t remember a movie that has earned 50 times more than its production cost; Get Out has done this miracle at the box office.

Domestic: $175,484,140, Foreign: $76,950,110, Total: $252,434,250

Metacritic Review

Without much reasoning or arguments, “It” makes its place among the finest horror films of all times along with being the number 1 of the year 2017. Each element of the film is thoughtful and effective, such as setting of the film, script, characters and the clown villain “Pennywise”.

Storyline: The town of Derry has been cursed since years by a clown named “Pennywise”; who embarks to kill children every 27 years, remains in the sewer lines of Derry.

One day, a kid Georgie is dragged into sewer by Pennywise when he chases a paper boat, given by his elder brother Bill. A few months later, Bill finds a clue to find his lost brother. Bill gathers with his friends to find Georgie; the group soon discovers that it is a Pennywise who has taken Georgie and has been killing Derry’s kids since several years.

Box Office: As I have already mentioned about the perfection of this film, hence the film has also proved it at the box office. “It” is Stephen King’s highest grossing film so far.

Domestic: $218,710,619, Foreign: $152,600,000, Total: $371,310,619

Don’t Miss: As we have reached to the end of this Best list; I know that there would be a few movies that you think should be in the list. But including every top film in a Best list is not possible mate ;).

Being not listed above, these films are still amazing:

  • Hounds of Love
  • Berlin Syndrome
  • The Limehouse Golem
  • A Cure for Wellness, Life.

That is all in this post. I hope that the list will help you to decide which horror film to watch next time when you have spare time.

I would love to know your views; it could be anything like your best horror films of 2017 or any movie that I have missed or any comment related to the article. Suggestions are most welcome.
